Discover the people and places history left behind - a mystically remote region in New Zealand's Central North Island

Abandoned since 2009, the 142km long Stratford-Okahukura Line with its 24 tunnels and 90 plus bridges, all hand-built, now serves as our playground.

The quiet mystery of this seldom seen region known as the Forgotten World, is steeped in history and cultural significance. Immerse yourself in passionate storytelling about our ancestry whilst exploring one of the country's most beautiful and remote locations, with its backcountry ghost towns, pristine native bush, rugged hills and deep hidden valleys.

Forgotten World Adventures are experts in guided experiences throughout this spectacular destination. Choose from six unique adventures, each featuring an iconic self-driven guided rail cart journey between Taumaraunui and Stratford. Experiences can also include a jet boat ride along the majestic Whanganui River, helicopter flight over the Whanganui National Park and visits to the unique Whangamōmona Hotel and Bridge to Nowhere amongst other historic landmarks and attractions.

The staff were top notch, nothing was too much trouble for any of them.

“The best one day excursion in the King Country – no, the best in NZ”

One of the best excursions I have ever experienced. The organisation was great, the personnel were friendly, engaging, knowledgeable and helpful. The stopovers and refreshments were first class. Highly recommend to anyone with an interest in early NZ history, a love of the outdoors and even a smidgen of a sense of adventure.
