A mystical remote region in New Zealand's Central North Island

WELCOME TO THE FORGOTTEN WORLD

We are experts in guided experiences throughout this spectacular destination. We offer the thrill of a scenic train journey from the unmatched perspective of a rail cart, an unrivalled opportunity in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Choose from six unique adventures, each featuring an iconic self-driven rail cart journey on the line which runs between Taumarunui and Stratford.

Abandoned since 2009, the 142km long Stratford-Okahukura Line with its 24 tunnels and 90 plus bridges, all hand-built, now serves as our playground. The quiet mystery of this seldom seen region known as the Forgotten World, is steeped in historical and cultural significance. Immerse yourself in Māori history and passionate storytelling about the region’s early pioneers whilst exploring one of the country’s most beautiful and remote locations, with its backcountry towns, pristine native bush, rugged hills and deep hidden valleys.

Experiences can also include jet boating along the majestic Whanganui awa (river), helicopter flights over the Whanganui National Park and visits to historic landmarks and heritage sites.

Open mid-October to mid-May.

Our History

Discover the history of the line

The 142km long historic Stratford-Okahukura Line (SOL) was built as a secondary route to the Main Trunk line and opened up this hinterland for farming, trade and industry. Construction began in 1901 and took nearly 32 years to complete. Abandoned since 2009, the SOL now serves as our playground and is central to the Forgotten World story.  Heralded to this day as a remarkable feat of engineering, our experiences offer a chance to learn about the people and places history has since left behind.
