We’re delighted to announce that we have raised a grand total of $11,590 for the Taumarunui Women’s Refuge through our inaugural fundraiser event. ‘Ride for Refuge’ took place on Saturday 13th April when around 40 special guests, including rugby royalty Sir Wayne Smith KNZM, departed the Forgotten World Motel for their day’s adventure. Accompanied by local guide Ray Wright, one of the company’s longest serving members, they were treated to a home-cooked lunch served in the Tokirima School hall before boarding the rail carts and embarking on their journey. The day was full of camaraderie in spite of the less than favourable weather and spirits were high as the group meandered its way through old townships, pristine native bush and the sheer natural beauty of the King Country. Sir Wayne was a wonderful support on the day and even helped clear some rocks from the track brought down by the rain! As their rail journey came to an end, pulling into Whangamōmona, everyone was ready for a cold beer or glass of bubbles! The group welcomed the warm lodgings and hospitality at the Whangamōmona Hotel and many stayed for a hearty dinner, enjoying a few yarns and soaking up the region’s history.
The Forgotten World team would like to thank our staff who donated their time to the event and Terri, Tessa, Viv and Klara from the Women’s Refuge, who spoke so passionately about the charity. We look forward to working together in the future as we continue to support the fight against domestic violence.
