The Ultimate 2 day trip! 5 friends had the most relaxing an informative 2 days riding along the railway line between Stratford and Okahukura in golf carts.
We stayed at the Forgotten Highway Motel on Taumaranui on the Friday night, then took the shuttle to Stratford the next morning where we boarded our golf cart, along with 13 others, to travel back to The Whangamomona Hotel.
Our guide, Ray Wright, was an excellent orator, and shared a mine of information about the history of the railroad, and kept us entertained with stories about the people and towns who were involved in it’s construction. The staff assisting Ray were also knowledgeable, efficient and polite. We stopped for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea, which included tasty home baking.
I would thoroughly recommend doing this trip through a part of New Zealand that was once a busy highway, and has since been considered “forgotten”. (3 Mar 2025)
