Forgotten World Adventures is “Real New Zealand, Real Locals” at its finest. Simply phenomenal! The rail tour is an endearing, meditative ride through remote countryside and native bush (temperate rainforest) with interesting stops in quaint little spots along the route for tea, lunch, and historical commentary. It is the perfect combination of a private experience on your modified golf cart and being part of a small group (which consisted mostly of folks from New Zealand on our tour). The overnight stay at the Whangamomona Hotel is also the real deal experience, with locals and adventurous, off-the-beaten-track tourists gathering at the only pub in this tiny, remote, wild west “republic” for beer, food, and conversation. The helicopter flight over stunningly beautiful terrain gives you a birds-eye view of just how remote and rugged the area is. The helicopter only held 4 guests (plus the pilot), so the flight is an intimate experience with everyone having access to a window. Finally, the jet boat ride up the Whanganui River is peaceful, fun and gorgeous, with periodic stops and commentary provided by…you guessed it — a local! The boat ride included a beautiful hike through native bush to see the famous Bridge to Nowhere, an excellent opportunity to stretch our legs. All aspects of the tour felt safe and in good hands, and Midge’s home-baked goods are the best! The history of this remote, largely abandoned farming region is fascinating. Its memory is kept alive through Forgotten World Adventures, which also contributes greatly to the regional economy. Every staff member at FWA, from motel staff to guides, were friendly, down to earth, and professional. I can’t recommend this tour highly enough. It is worth every penny! (8 November 2025)
