It’s unique and combines adventure, scenery and history really well – add it to the list! This is definitely one to consider adding to the bucket list – it really is an adventure! There are different tours available and ours was the four day Epic. Riding in self-drive golf carts, taking two days you travel along the abandoned 142 km Statford Okahukura rail line stopping along the way for very well catered breaks (food allergies not a problem) and to hear stories about the places and history along the line. Overnighting at the Whangamomona pub is a great opportunity to get to know your fellow traveller and enjoy some traditional pub fare.
Once off the rails, it was onto Whanganui for the night for more social catchup and then onto the Whanganui National Park the next morning where you transition onto a jet boat for a trip down the river. More great scenery, more well catered breaks and more learning about places and history including a hike to the Bridge to Nowhere (about 45 mins each way). Overnighting at the Blue Duck Station is not to be missed! Well off the beaten track and made very welcome, you could easily spend much more time there. Back on the river for the final day and more great scenery.
Really well organised, friendly and informative staff, great scenery and some local history thrown in. (25 Feb 2025)
