Tongariro Alpine Crossing
Distance from FWA: 75.7km
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is the best one-day hike in New Zealand and is even regarded as one of the top ten single-day treks in the world. A genuine wonder of the natural world, and the crown jewel of Ruapehu, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a challenging journey across a remarkable volcanic landscape but is most definitely worth the hard work. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a popular destination for hikers in the summer months due to its incredible mountain beauty and turquoise lakes. The 19.4km hike starts from the Mangatepopo Carpark (off State Highway 47, south of Lake Taupo). Between October and 30 April there is a four-hour time restriction for private vehicles at the Mangatepopo Road-end. This gives visitors time to enjoy short walks but people wanting to do the entire hike, which takes an average of 7-8 hours, will need to use shuttle transport.
Note: This hike is in an alpine environment and we strongly recommend using a guide. The weather is changeable, ice and snow are present throughout the autumn months.

Not far in from the beginning of the track is a concrete structure across a small stream and this was once a small reservoir used to provide water for the tanks for filling the steam engines in days gone by The track winds up the hill and even though there are some steps it is still quite steep. Some very large totaras are quite close to the track and it is good they have been preserved so close to town. The track divides into two to form a loop at the top and ends abruptly at a fence line.
