A memorable half-day guided rail cart adventure between Taumarunui and the old rural community of Tokirima

Immerse yourself in the beauty, culture and Māori history of the region and marvel at the engineering and determination of our pioneers as you travel along 43km of the railway. Venture through 10 hand-cut tunnels, including the longest at 1.5km, and travel across a number of the line’s impressive hand-built bridges. A visit to Lauren’s Lavender Farm completes the itinerary; an intriguing introduction to the Forgotten World.

With two departure options, choose to travel from Taumarunui to Tokirima or do the trip in reverse from Tokirima to Taumarunui.

  • Shuttle bus from Forgotten World Motel to Okahukura Station (10 mins)
  • Rail cart to Tokirima with stops at Matiere and Ōhura
  • Morning tea at Matiere (20 mins)
  • Lunch at Tokirima – opportunity to purchase souvenirs at ‘The Shed’ (30 mins)
  • Shuttle bus from Tokirima to Lavender Farm via Forgotten World Highway SH43 (30 mins)
  • Lavender Farm visit/stroll – hot/cold beverages and snacks available for purchase
  • Shuttle bus to Forgotten World Motel via Forgotten World Highway SH43 (15 mins)
  • Return Forgotten World Motel at approx. 1pm

 

WHAT TO BRING

Sturdy footwear (no jandals), sunglasses, sunblock, sun hat, camera, water bottle, snacks, layers/warm clothing (gloves, beanie hat, scarf – we often experience four seasons in one day), waterproof jacket, warm jacket, insect repellent and allergy medications. A waterproof storage container for bags/belongings is available on the rail carts.

Stay the night before or after your experience at the Forgotten World Motel in Taumarunui for your comfort and convenience; all adventures leave from our front door. Cooked and continental breakfasts available (plus GF and DF options) – enquire on check-in.* Centrally located, it’s the ideal base from which to explore the region’s activities and is within easy walking distance of the town’s cafés, restaurants and shops.
