Republic of Whangamōmona

A historic town brimming with character, the Republic of Whangamōmona offers a unique glimpse into New Zealand’s quirky past.

Named by Lonely Planet as a key highlight on the Forgotten World Highway, and previously presided over by a goat, a poodle and a turtle, Whangamōmona has a fascinating story to tell. Known for its frontier history, the town was declared a republic in 1989. It is also home to the legendary Whangamōmona Hotel, the most remote country hotel in New Zealand, where you can enjoy a meal, a pint and a yarn.
