On the 1st of July Vicki and Peter Harding and tour guide, Michelle Dempsey while out on a 5 tunnel tour through the Forgotten World, came across a little native ruru (otherwise known as a morepork) in tunnel 20.
Vicki and Peter named him Matiere as tunnel 20 is the closest to Matiere.
He was unable to fly so they picked him up and brought him back to Forgotten World Adventures depot. Wendy our lovely receptionist rung the Vet and they suggested that we give Carol at Bird Rescue Turangi a call.
The morepork spent 6 weeks with Carol at the rescue centre recovering from a broken wing. Carol named him Gotten (Forgotten World). It turns out that Gotten was only young, under a year old.
So it was with great excitement that on the 16th August, Adele Josephs and Michelle released the morepork Gotten back into tunnel 20 to rejoin his tunnel mate, another morepork that our team have sighted periodically.
This was a certainly an unexpected bonus for those out on the 5 Tunnel tour that day!
