Unplugged yet still ‘on the line’ as you travel the entire 142km from Okahukura to Stratford or Stratford to Okahukura with an overnight stay (additional to tour - see details below) in Whangamomona.  You’ll go through all 24 tunnels, cross all 98 bridges and see the remnants of the original settlements along the line. The history of this unique landscape will resonate as you absorb the stories and relive the memories of New Zealand’s pioneering past with this two-day journey back in time.  The ultimate experience.

Trip details

 

Price: $595 Per Person (overnight accommodation in Whangamomona is NOT included and must be booked separately)

There are two Ultimate options:

Ultimate 1 – RailCarts travel along the line - Okahukura to Whangamomona to Stratford

Choose this option to start in Taumarunui and finish in Stratford

Day one:  RailCarts depart Taumarunui at 7.30am.  Arrive in Whangamomona approx 3.45pm. Transfer to your chosen and independently booked Whangamomona accommodation where your luggage will await you.

Day two:  Depart Whangamomona at 9.00am.  Arrive in Stratford approx. 3.00pm.        

 

Ultimate 2 – RailCarts travel along the line - Stratford to Whangamomona to Okahukura

Choose this option to start in Stratford and finish in Taumarunui

Day one:  Railcarts depart Stratford at 9.30am.  Arrive in Whangamomona approx 3.30pm. Transfer to your chosen and independently booked Whangamomona accommodation where your luggage will await you.

Day two:  Railcarts depart Whangamomona at 9:30am.  Arrive in Taumarunui approx. 4.30pm. 

 

Included in your day:  

Lunch, morning and afternoon teas included both days.

 

NOT Included - and must be booked independently of FWA

Due to Whangamomona Hotel policy all bookings for accommodation at the hotel must be made directly with them.  If you would like to stay at the hotel please call them and confirm that there is accommodation available for your chosen date. The hotel does set aside a number of rooms for Ultimate Adventurers but these may vary depending on prior bookings and are not guaranteed.

Return Travel

Return travel is not included in the tour price. 

  Options for the end of your tour include:
1. Catch the "Return" shuttle (additional to tour cost) $50 per person
2. Have your car/vehicle/camper van transferred to be waiting for you at the end of your adventure (additional to tour cost) $165 per vehicle
3. Enjoy onward travel by public transport from either Stratford or Taumarunui depending on where your tour ends.

Important information

What to bring:

Your overnight bag (not more than 10kg) will be delivered to your chosen accommodation in Whangamomona while you are on the rails

In this region the weather is changeable and it’s best to prepare for all conditions no matter the season  

Clothing that can be layered, including warm thermal/merino clothing with a good wind/rain jacket or shell is ideal

It can be very cool in the tunnels even in summer

We suggest you have the following:

  • Sunglasses
  • Camera
  • Binoculars
  • Water and extra snacks if required
  • Windproof jacket with hood even in fine weather
  • Hat, scarf and gloves
  • Sturdy footwear with warm socks
  • Pack a rainproof coat and over-trousers
  • Any personal medication as required
  • Often we now have local artisans offering a variety of local produce for sale at some of our stops.  You may like to bring along a little cash in case something appeals
