Join us for a Forgotten World Expedition. A two day, three part journey. The first day you will ride the rails on our  20 Tunnel tour which will transport you back through history to the Republic of Whangamomona! The second day after a spectacular helicopter flight over the Whanganui National Park to the Bridge to Nowhere, you'll be jet boating up the Whanganui River exploring historical sites and scenes on the longest commercial jet boat tour in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Expedition is two full days and includes one nights accommodation.

Day One:

RailCart down the Forgotten World Railway to the Republic of Whangamomona, more than 80km of total immersion into the true stories and tall tales woven into this unique landscape. Stay the night in the Republic, includes dinner and cooked breakfast.  

Day Two:

Starts with a relaxed breakfast. Then a helicopter will take you on a scenic flight over the Whanganui National Park from Whangamomona to meet the jet boat on the Whanganui River. You'll then walk to the Bridge to Nowhere (40 min each way) and spend the day travelling the Whanganui River, exploring the historical sites and scenery on the way, all the way back to Taumarunui. Morning, afternoon tea and lunch all included.

Day One : 
Depart 7:30am from our Taumarunui Depot.  Arrive in Whangamomona approx 3:45pm.  Enjoy the afternoon and evening in the Republic.  Your overnight luggage will be delivered to your accommodation while you are on the rails.

Day Two:
Depart 7:00 from Whangamomona.  Arrive at our Taumarunui depot at approx 4:30pm

The Adventure :  The Expedition will transport you by rail, river and helicopter to truly experience the challenges that the early settlers faced when arriving in this region. Marvel at how they dug the rail line through, enjoy the Republic of Whangamomona, fly from Whangamomona to the Whanganui River to board your Jet Boat to the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’! See remnants of the days when the river was used by steamboats and as the main source of transport for the early settlers.   Take a beautiful and easy 40 minute native bush walk to the bridge then sit and relax, have your supplied picnic lunch and imagine what it must have been like to live there for the early pioneer.  Then enjoy the scenery and plentiful bird life on the journey up river completing the circle back to Taumarunui.

If weather negates the ability to use the helicopter. A shuttle will be arranged to transport to the river.

What to bring:

In this region the weather is changeable and it’s best to prepare for all conditions no matter the season  

Clothing that can be layered, including warm thermal/merino clothing with a good wind/rain jacket or shell is ideal

It can be very cool in the tunnels even in summer

We suggest you have the following:

  • Sunglasses
  • Camera
  • Binoculars
  • Water and extra snacks if required - we provide lunch and morning and afternoon tea snacks
  • Windproof jacket with hood even in fine weather
  • Hat, scarf and gloves
  • Sturdy footwear with warm socks
  • Pack a rainproof coat and over-trousers
  • Any personal medication as required
  • Change of clothes for the evening
  • Often we now have local artisans offering a variety of local produce for sale at some of our stops.  You may like to bring along a little cash in case something appeals.
